The project involved transforming a private residence into a smart home with automation solutions tailored to the client’s specific needs. The primary objective was to integrate a central system to manage lighting, smart plugs, and heating while ensuring that the setup remained non-permanent, as the client lived in a rental apartment in Berlin. Given the constraints of a rental property, the solution needed to be flexible, easy to install, and just as easy to remove if necessary.
To achieve this, we implemented Home Assistant as the central control hub. Not only is it open-source and free, but it’s also one of the most versatile platforms available, seamlessly integrating devices from various brands and protocols, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Zigbee. This allowed us to connect multiple smart home components without being restricted to a single brand or proprietary ecosystem.
Since the client’s family members weren’t very tech-savvy, the focus was on simplicity and usability. We integrated phone-based systems like Apple HomeKit to ensure smooth and familiar operation while also making sure that every smart device had a corresponding physical control option. This hybrid approach ensured that even those unfamiliar with smart technology could use the system effortlessly.
Among the specific solutions deployed, we installed smart thermostats programmed with a detailed calendar to optimize room temperatures at specific times, leading to a 30-40% reduction in heating costs—a crucial benefit in Europe, where heating expenses are high. To enhance security and prevent damage, we added smart sensors, including water leak detectors under sinks and presence sensors to notify the client of unauthorized access when the apartment was vacant. Additionally, motion-activated lighting was implemented in commonly used areas like the hallway, kitchen, and bathroom to improve convenience and energy efficiency.
The result was a fully functional, intuitive, and energy-efficient smart home system that enhanced comfort and security without requiring permanent installations.
